What is a computer system consultant? Let's try to define a computer system first before we define what a consultant does. This definition comes from BusinessDictionary.com.

A system of interconnected computers that share a central storage system and various peripheral devices such as a printers, scanners, or routers. Each computer connected to the system can operate independently, but has the ability to communicate with other external devices and computers.

And from Webopedia:

A complete, working computer. Computer systems will include the computer along with any software and peripheral devices that are necessary to make the computer function. Every computer system, for example, requires an operating system.

Webopedia comes the closest to my definition. However they leave out the multiple computers in their definition and any mention of networking the computers.

All of the above sources tend to agree on what a consultant does.

A computer systems consultant therefore provides expert advice and planning for the company's computer systems. A computer systems consultant must have an understanding of the company's needs, good people skills, a thorough knowledge of hardware and software and the ability to work within a well defined budget. The goal is to provide technological solutions that allow the company to focus on their business, not their computers.
